“I really hope they like my proposal. I think my magazine will be peng!”

It’s hard times for young school-leavers at the moment, the economic crisis has taken its toll and the news is all doom and gloom with statistics showing unbelievably high levels of youth unemployment. So we ‘re doing our bit and as part of our commitment to fostering new talent in our hometown, we’re giving our help and services to the students of our local school – Passmores Academy, Harlow. (the school made famous in the channel four award winning documentary ‘Educating Essex’

Last month we set the students a brief, which they’ve got their marketing and creative teeth into it! So far year 10 students have researched, written, named – and are now at the first stage of designing – a magazine to rival Men’s Health. Once the designs are complete they’ll plan and create a marketing campaign for it using whatever media they see fit.

They are clearly enjoying the project – one student exclaimed “This is the coolest thing I have done at school. It’s like having a real job!”

Apart from coaching the students every step of the way, building their confidence and opening their eyes to opportunities within the creative media sector. Two top performing students will be awarded the title Mulberry’s Young Marketeer 2013. The winners will be selected in January, they’ll have their magazine professionally printed and come in for two weeks work experience at Mulberry. Here they become involved with all aspects of the business, taking a job from the brief stage right through to a client presentation, but more importantly they are given a ‘Mulberry Mentor’ who helps them in every way possible all the way through leave school and beyond. If they wish to enter into the creative media world or any related industry we’ll pull out all the stops to help them succeed.

The Mulberry Young Marketeer of the year 2013 is just the first in a number of local initiatives Mulberry’s launching over the next two years, supporting Essex businesses and education, after all there’s no better place to start than at school.

Mulberry Advertising is going back to school and has set a brief for the pupils of Passmores Academy, Harlow. This is the school featured in last year’s Channel 4 programme Educating Essex. The reason? Mulberry’s Young Marketeer 2013 award. Over the next three months Mulberry is coaching and working with the pupils on a set project, which forms part of their BTEC work.

Head of Creative Media Production Michael Norton says

“The proposals are in! The students of Passmores Academy have been overwhelmingly positive in their review of Mulberry Advertising’s involvement so far this year. When asked, Harrison Friend stated, “I thought that I would be really nervous talking to Paul, but he was really friendly. We ended up just having a chat about my magazine plan. I have so many good ideas now!”

Mr Norton, the Head of Creative Media at Passmores, has nothing but positive things to say about Mulberry’s involvement in his BTEC programme: “There could be nothing better than having industry professionals as special guests in your classroom. Paul’s ideas regarding advertising, images and layout have been tremendously valuable and there is a real buzz in the building!”

The pupils are researching, writing, naming and designing a fictitious health magazine that they subsequently create a marketing campaign for. Then the real hard work begins – choosing the two winners. Both winners get their magazine professionally printed and come in for two weeks work experience at Mulberry. Here they become involved with all aspects of the business, taking a job from the brief stage right through to a client presentation. The students are then given a Mulberry mentor who offers support until their schooling ends. So, if they wish to enter into the media, marketing, design, digital, advertising world or any related industry we’re there to help them succeed.

The Mulberry Young Marketeer of the year 2013 is just the first of a series of projects Mulberry is launching over the next two years to support Essex businesses and education, after all there’s no better place to start than at school.

Look at this! In a bid to promote their new monitors, LG decided to scare office workers by fitting the displays to the floor of an elevator. They run footage on the screens making it look like the floor of the lift is collapsing.

In a viral online film we see the response of the passengers as the panels of the floor beneath them appear to fall down the lift shaft.

Some claim the video is faked and the people in the lift are actors but faked or real it’s got over hundred thousand hits as a viral film.

After using a Coke Zero machine in the station, unsuspecting travellers were asked via a touch screen if they wanted to win exclusive tickets to SKYFALL.

Once they gave their name they were then told they had 70 seconds to get to platform 6. That didn’t sound too difficult, but as with all Bond tasks – it wasn’t as easy as it seemed with obstacles slowing down would be 007’s mission to reach platform 6.

They had to make their way past men carrying sheets of glass, fruit stalls falling over, joggers, dogs, and an attractive woman who did her best to stop them.

If they made it to the platform in time they had to sing the Bond theme to bag the tickets.

There’s a new underground movement operating on the London… underground.

Their intentions are to raise smiles and giggles from commuters.

The rebel gagsters call themselves “Stickers on The Central line” and claim to be responsible for the beautification of the trains and stations. They have been slapping stickers over the information signs on trains, reserving spots for smelly commuters, drinkers and even a Royal seat reserved for Her Majesty the Queen’s bottom. They’ve also renamed Shepherd’s Bush station Shepherd’s Pie.

What tourists make of a stop that says go back three places is anyone’s guess.

Not surprisingly London Transport don’t find this funny.

The group invite new ideas on their website, but of course at Mulberry we take no responsibility for any new sticker ideas you may wish to contribute, so don’t shoot the messenger please London Transport.

Google have opened their doors for the first time to offer a glimpse into their huge data centres, which power the online world. With hundreds of thousands of servers, multi-coloured cables and bicycles for engineers so they can get from one end of the centre to the other, it looks more like a film set from a sci-fi movie than a server centre. They are housed around the world in vast buildings as diverse as a converted paper mill in Finland to a custom-made server farm in Iowa.

If you decide to break into these places and have a closer look (a word of warning – the security force is strong) the front door is protected by a Star Wars Stormtrooper.

Silkscreen art of their cans, but times change and they are now offering, limited-edition, Campbell’s soup cans featuring authentic reproductions of Andy Warhol’s 1960’s labels, complete with his reproduced signature. If you’d like to invest, Barney’s of New York are offering the cans at $12 each or if you are a serious art dealer $48 for a set of four.

If you’ve got a bit more loose change his signed print of Judy Garland is currently on sale for $150,000 – though, unlike the soup cans, it doesn’t taste good!
